New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Follow God's example in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, because that sacrifice was like sweet perfume to him. 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God's people. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes -- these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is really an idolater who worships the things of this world. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the terrible anger of God comes upon all those who disobey him. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient.
Don't participate in the things these people do. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
For though your hearts were once full of darkness, now you are full of light from the Lord, and your behavior should show it! 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.
Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, rebuke and expose them. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
But when the light shines on them, it becomes clear how evil these things are. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,
And where your light shines, it will expose their evil deeds. This is why it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light." 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise,
Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days. 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Don't act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
And you will always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And further, you will submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
You wives will submit to your husbands as you do to the Lord. 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of his body, the church; he gave his life to be her Savior. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
As the church submits to Christ, so you wives must submit to your husbands in everything. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God's word. 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,
He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man is actually loving himself when he loves his wife. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
No one hates his own body but lovingly cares for it, just as Christ cares for his body, which is the church. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church--
And we are his body. 30 for we are members of his body.
As the Scriptures say, "A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one." 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."
This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church.
So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
