I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 4 There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to one hope when you were called--
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.
Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people." 8 This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men."
(When it says, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 9 (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions ?
He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)
The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
