English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient.
Therefore do not become partners with them; 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,
for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise,
making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
