1 C'?tait du temps d'Assu?rus, de cet Assu?rus qui r?gnait depuis l'Inde jusqu'en ?thiopie sur cent vingt-sept provinces;

1 This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over %"127 provinces stretching from India to Cush:

2 et le roi Assu?rus ?tait alors assis sur son tr?ne royal ? Suse, dans la capitale.

2 At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa,
|
|
3 La troisi?me ann?e de son r?gne, il fit un festin ? tous ses princes et ? ses serviteurs; les commandants de l'arm?e des Perses et des M?des, les grands et les chefs des provinces furent r?unis en sa pr?sence.

3 and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials. The military leaders of Persia and Media, the princes, and the nobles of the provinces were present.

4 Il montra la splendide richesse de son royaume et l'?clatante magnificence de sa grandeur pendant nombre de jours, pendant cent quatre-vingts jours.
|
4 For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty.
|
|
5 Lorsque ces jours furent ?coul?s, le roi fit pour tout le peuple qui se trouvait ? Suse, la capitale, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit, un festin qui dura sept jours, dans la cour du jardin de la maison royale.

5 When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days, in the enclosed garden of the king's palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest, who were in the citadel of Susa.

6 Des tentures blanches, vertes et bleues, ?taient attach?es par des cordons de byssus et de pourpre ? des anneaux d'argent et ? des colonnes de marbre. Des lits d'or et d'argent reposaient sur un pav? de porphyre, de marbre, de nacre et de pierres noires.

6 The garden had hangings of white and blue linen, fastened with cords of white linen and purple material to silver rings on marble pillars. There were couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and other costly stones.

7 On servait ? boire dans des vases d'or, de diff?rentes esp?ces, et il y avait abondance de vin royal, gr?ce ? la lib?ralit? du roi.
|
7 Wine was served in goblets of gold, each one different from the other, and the royal wine was abundant, in keeping with the king's liberality.
|
|
8 Mais on ne for?ait personne ? boire, car le roi avait ordonn? ? tous les gens de sa maison de se conformer ? la volont? de chacun.
|
8 By the king's command each guest was allowed to drink in his own way, for the king instructed all the wine stewards to serve each man what he wished.
|
|
9 La reine Vasthi fit aussi un festin pour les femmes dans la maison royale du roi Assu?rus.
|
9 Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in the royal palace of King Xerxes.
|
|
10 Le septi?me jour, comme le coeur du roi ?tait r?joui par le vin, il ordonna ? Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Z?thar et Carcas, les sept eunuques qui servaient devant le roi Assu?rus,

10 On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him--Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Carcas--
|

11 d'amener en sa pr?sence la reine Vasthi, avec la couronne royale, pour montrer sa beaut? aux peuples et aux grands, car elle ?tait belle de figure.
|
11 to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at.
|
|
12 Mais la reine Vasthi refusa de venir, quand elle re?ut par les eunuques l'ordre du roi. Et le roi fut tr?s irrit?, il fut enflamm? de col?re.
|
12 But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger.
|
|
13 Alors le roi s'adressa aux sages qui avaient la connaissance des temps. Car ainsi se traitaient les affaires du roi, devant tous ceux qui connaissaient les lois et le droit.
|
13 Since it was customary for the king to consult experts in matters of law and justice, he spoke with the wise men who understood the times
|
|
14 Il avait aupr?s de lui Carschena, Sch?thar, Admatha, Tarsis, M?r?s, Marsena, Memucan, sept princes de Perse et de M?die, qui voyaient la face du roi et qui occupaient le premier rang dans le royaume.
|
14 and were closest to the king--Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, the seven nobles of Persia and Media who had special access to the king and were highest in the kingdom.

|
15 Quelle loi, dit-il, faut-il appliquer ? la reine Vasthi, pour n'avoir point ex?cut? ce que le roi Assu?rus lui a ordonn? par les eunuques?
|
15 "According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?" he asked. "She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her."
|
|
16 Memucan r?pondit devant le roi et les princes: Ce n'est pas seulement ? l'?gard du roi que la reine Vasthi a mal agi; c'est aussi envers tous les princes et tous les peuples qui sont dans toutes les provinces du roi Assu?rus.

16 Then Memucan replied in the presence of the king and the nobles, "Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the peoples of all the provinces of King Xerxes.
|
|
17 Car l'action de la reine parviendra ? la connaissance de toutes les femmes, et les portera ? m?priser leurs maris; elles diront: Le roi Assu?rus avait ordonn? qu'on amen?t en sa pr?sence la reine Vasthi, et elle n'y est pas all?e.
|
17 For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, 'King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.'
|
|
18 Et d?s ce jour les princesses de Perse et de M?die qui auront appris l'action de la reine la rapporteront ? tous les chefs du roi; de l? beaucoup de m?pris et de col?re.
|
18 This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the queen's conduct will respond to all the king's nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord.
|
|
19 Si le roi le trouve bon, qu'on publie de sa part et qu'on inscrive parmi les lois des Perses et des M?des, avec d?fense de la transgresser, une ordonnance royale d'apr?s laquelle Vasthi ne para?tra plus devant le roi Assu?rus et le roi donnera la dignit? de reine ? une autre qui soit meilleure qu'elle.

19 "Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she.

20 L'?dit du roi sera connu dans tout son royaume, quelque grand qu'il soit, et toutes les femmes rendront honneur ? leurs maris, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit.
|
20 Then when the king's edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest."
|
|
21 Cet avis fut approuv? du roi et des princes, et le roi agit d'apr?s la parole de Memucan.
|
21 The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memucan proposed.
|
|
22 Il envoya des lettres ? toutes les provinces du royaume, ? chaque province selon son ?criture et ? chaque peuple selon sa langue; elles portaient que tout homme devait ?tre le ma?tre dans sa maison, et qu'il parlerait la langue de son peuple.
|
22 He sent dispatches to all parts of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, proclaiming in each people's tongue that every man should be ruler over his own household.
