To Moshe [ADONAI] said, "Come up to ADONAI -you, Aharon, Nadav, Avihu, and seventy of the leaders of Isra'el. Prostrate yourselves at a distance, 1 Then he said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance,
while Moshe alone approaches ADONAI -the others are not to approach, and the people are not to go up with him." 2 but Moses alone is to approach the LORD; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him."
Moshe came and told the people everything ADONAI had said, including all the rulings. The people answered with one voice: "We will obey every word ADONAI has spoken." 3 When Moses went and told the people all the LORD's words and laws, they responded with one voice, "Everything the LORD has said we will do."
Moshe wrote down all the words of ADONAI. He rose early in the morning, built an altar at the base of the mountain and set upright twelve large stones to represent the twelve tribes of Isra'el. 4 Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
He sent the young men of the people of Isra'el to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice peace offerings of oxen to ADONAI. 5 Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the LORD.
Moshe took half of the blood and put it in basins; the other half of the blood he splashed against the altar. 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar.
Then he took the book of the covenant and read it aloud, so that the people could hear; and they responded, "Everything that ADONAI has spoken, we will do and obey." 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, "We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey."
Moshe took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which ADONAI has made with you in accordance with all these words." 8 Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."
Moshe, Aharon, Nadav, Avihu and seventy of the leaders went up; 9 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up
and they saw the God of Isra'el. Under his feet was something like a sapphire stone pavement as clear as the sky itself. 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire, clear as the sky itself.
He did not reach out his hand against these notables of Isra'el; on the contrary, they saw God, even as they were eating and drinking. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.
ADONAI said to Moshe, "Come up to me on the mountain, and stay there. I will give you the stone tablets with the Torah and the mitzvot I have written on them, so that you can teach them." 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commands I have written for their instruction."
Moshe got up, also Y'hoshua his assistant; and Moshe went up onto the mountain of God. 13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God.
To the leaders he said, "Stay here for us, until we come back to you. See, Aharon and Hur are with you; whoever has a problem should turn to them."(S: Maftir) 14 He said to the elders, "Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them."
Moshe went up onto the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. (A: Maftir) 15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it,
The glory of ADONAI stayed on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day he called to Moshe out of the cloud. 16 and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud.
To the people of Isra'el the glory of ADONAI looked like a raging fire on the top of the mountain. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.
Moshe entered the cloud and went up on the mountain; he was on the mountain forty days and nights. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
