"Moreover take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 1 "Take up a lament concerning the princes of Israel
and say: 'What is your mother? A lioness: She lay down among the lions; Among the young lions she nourished her cubs. 2 and say: " 'What a lioness was your mother among the lions! She lay down among the young lions and reared her cubs.
She brought up one of her cubs, And he became a young lion; He learned to catch prey, And he devoured men. 3 She brought up one of her cubs, and he became a strong lion. He learned to tear the prey and he devoured men.
The nations also heard of him; He was trapped in their pit, And they brought him with chains to the land of Egypt. 4 The nations heard about him, and he was trapped in their pit. They led him with hooks to the land of Egypt.
'When she saw that she waited, that her hope was lost, She took another of her cubs and made him a young lion. 5 " 'When she saw her hope unfulfilled, her expectation gone, she took another of her cubs and made him a strong lion.
He roved among the lions, And became a young lion; He learned to catch prey; He devoured men. 6 He prowled among the lions, for he was now a strong lion. He learned to tear the prey and he devoured men.
He knew their desolate places, And laid waste their cities; The land with its fullness was desolated By the noise of his roaring. 7 He broke down their strongholds and devastated their towns. The land and all who were in it were terrified by his roaring.
Then the nations set against him from the provinces on every side, And spread their net over him; He was trapped in their pit. 8 Then the nations came against him, those from regions round about. They spread their net for him, and he was trapped in their pit.
They put him in a cage with chains, And brought him to the king of Babylon; They brought him in nets, That his voice should no longer be heard on the mountains of Israel. 9 With hooks they pulled him into a cage and brought him to the king of Babylon. They put him in prison, so his roar was heard no longer on the mountains of Israel.
'Your mother was like a vine in your bloodline, Planted by the waters, Fruitful and full of branches Because of many waters. 10 " 'Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard planted by the water; it was fruitful and full of branches because of abundant water.
She had strong branches for scepters of rulers. She towered in stature above the thick branches, And was seen in her height amid the dense foliage. 11 Its branches were strong, fit for a ruler's scepter. It towered high above the thick foliage, conspicuous for its height and for its many branches.
But she was plucked up in fury, She was cast down to the ground, And the east wind dried her fruit. Her strong branches were broken and withered; The fire consumed them. 12 But it was uprooted in fury and thrown to the ground. The east wind made it shrivel, it was stripped of its fruit; its strong branches withered and fire consumed them.
And now she is planted in the wilderness, In a dry and thirsty land. 13 Now it is planted in the desert, in a dry and thirsty land.
Fire has come out from a rod of her branches And devoured her fruit, So that she has no strong branch--a scepter for ruling.' " This is a lamentation, and has become a lamentation. 14 Fire spread from one of its main branches and consumed its fruit. No strong branch is left on it fit for a ruler's scepter.' This is a lament and is to be used as a lament."
