GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
The LORD said to me, "Son of man, eat what you find. Eat this scroll. Then speak to the people of Israel." 1 And he said to me, "Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the house of Israel."
So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat.
He said to me, "Son of man, eat this scroll I'm giving you, and fill your stomach with it." So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth. 3 Then he said to me, "Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it." So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.
He said to me, "Son of man, go to the people of Israel, and speak my words to them. 4 He then said to me: "Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak my words to them.
I am not sending you to people whose language is hard to understand or difficult to speak. I am sending you to Israel. 5 You are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and difficult language, but to the house of Israel--
I am not sending you to nations whose language is hard to understand, difficult to speak, or whose words you cannot understand. If I send you to those nations, they will certainly listen to you. 6 not to many peoples of obscure speech and difficult language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.
But the people of Israel will refuse to listen to you because they refuse to listen to me. All the people of Israel are very stubborn and hardheaded. 7 But the house of Israel is not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for the whole house of Israel is hardened and obstinate.
Yet, I will make you as stubborn and as hardheaded as they are. 8 But I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are.
I will make you as hard as a diamond, harder than stone. Don't be afraid of them. Don't be terrified in their presence, even though they are rebellious people." 9 I will make your forehead like the hardest stone, harder than flint. Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious house."
He also said to me, "Son of man, take to heart everything I have spoken to you, and listen closely. 10 And he said to me, "Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you.
Go to the exiles, to your people. Whether they listen or not, tell them, 'This is what the Almighty LORD says.'" 11 Go now to your countrymen in exile and speak to them. Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says,' whether they listen or fail to listen."
Then the Spirit lifted me, and behind me I heard a loud thundering voice say, "Blessed is the LORD's glory, which left this place." 12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound--May the glory of the LORD be praised in his dwelling place!--
I also heard the noise of the wings of the living creatures touching one another and the noise of the wheels beside them as well as a loud rumbling. 13 the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound.
Then the Spirit lifted me and took me away. I went away feeling bitter and angry. The strong power of the LORD came over me. 14 The Spirit then lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD upon me.
I went to Tel Abib, to the exiles who lived by the Chebar River. I sat there among them for seven days. I was stunned. 15 I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Abib near the Kebar River. And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days--overwhelmed.
After seven days the LORD spoke his word to me. He said, 16 At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came to me:
"Son of man, I have made you a watchman over the people of Israel. Listen to what I say, and warn them for me. 17 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.
Suppose I tell you that wicked people will surely die, but you don't warn them or speak out so that they can change their wicked ways in order to save their lives. Then these wicked people will die because of their sin, but I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 18 When I say to a wicked man, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.
But suppose you warn the wicked people, and they don't turn from their wicked ways. Then they will die because of their sin, but you will save yourself. 19 But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself.
If righteous people turn from living the right way and do wrong, I will make them stumble, and they will die. If you don't warn them, they will die because of their sin, and the right things they did will not be remembered. I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 20 "Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. Since you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.
But if you warn righteous people not to sin, and they don't sin, they will certainly live because they listened to the warning. You will save yourself." 21 But if you do warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself."
The power of the LORD came over me. He said, "Get up, and go to the plain. I will speak to you there." 22 The hand of the LORD was upon me there, and he said to me, "Get up and go out to the plain, and there I will speak to you."
I got up and went to the plain. The LORD's glory was standing there like the glory I saw by the Chebar River, and I immediately bowed down. 23 So I got up and went out to the plain. And the glory of the LORD was standing there, like the glory I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown.
Then the Spirit entered me and stood me on my feet. He talked to me. He said, "Go into your home, and shut yourself inside. 24 Then the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet. He spoke to me and said: "Go, shut yourself inside your house.
People will tie you up with ropes, son of man, so that you can't go outside. 25 And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes; you will be bound so that you cannot go out among the people.
I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you can't talk or criticize them, even though they are rebellious people. 26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, though they are a rebellious house.
But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth. You will tell them, 'This is what the Almighty LORD says.' Some will listen, and some will refuse to listen. They are rebellious people." 27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says.' Whoever will listen let him listen, and whoever will refuse let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.
