GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
The LORD spoke his word to me. He said, 1 The word of the LORD came to me:
"What do you mean when you use this proverb about the land of Israel: 'Fathers have eaten sour grapes, and their children's teeth are set on edge'? 2 "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'?
As I live, declares the Almighty LORD, you will no longer use this proverb in Israel. 3 "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
The life of every person belongs to me. Fathers and their children belong to me. The person who sins will die. 4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
"Suppose a righteous person does what is fair and right. 5 "Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right.
He doesn't eat at the illegal mountain worship sites or look for help from the idols of the nation of Israel. He doesn't dishonor his neighbor's wife or have sexual intercourse with a woman while she is having her period. 6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife or lie with a woman during her period.
