New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward." 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
But Abram said, "Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"
Then Abram said, "Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!" 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."
And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, "This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir." 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir."
Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Then He said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it." 7 He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."
And he said, "Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?" 8 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?"
So He said to him, "Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." 9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."
Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him. 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. 15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."
And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces. 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates-- 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates--
the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites." 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."
