After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
But Abram said, "O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"
And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir." 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."
But the word of the Lord came to him, "This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir." 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir."
He brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Then he said to him, "I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess." 7 He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."
But he said, "O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?" 8 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?"
He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." 9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."
He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
Then the Lord said to Abram, "Know this for certain, that your offspring shall be aliens in a land that is not theirs, and shall be slaves there, and they shall be oppressed for four hundred years; 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
but I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. 15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates--
the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites." 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."
