American Standard Version (ASV) New International Version (NIV)
And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it he rested from all his work which God had created and made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Jehovah God made earth and heaven. 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens--
And no plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Jehovah God had not caused it to rain upon the earth: and there was not a man to till the ground; 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground,
but there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground--
And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
And Jehovah God planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
And out of the ground made Jehovah God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became four heads. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
The name of the first is Pishon: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
and the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.)
And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Cush. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.
And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth in front of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
And Jehovah God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
And Jehovah God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him. 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
And out of the ground Jehovah God formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens; and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them: and whatsoever the man called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help meet for him. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
and the rib, which Jehovah God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man."
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
