The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Heaven and Earth were finished, down to the last detail. 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
By the seventh day God had finished his work. On the seventh day he rested from all his work. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
God blessed the seventh day. He made it a Holy Day Because on that day he rested from his work, all the creating God had done. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
This is the story of how it all started, of Heaven and Earth when they were created. 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens--
At the time God made Earth and Heaven, before any grasses or shrubs had sprouted from the ground - God hadn't yet sent rain on Earth, nor was there anyone around to work the ground 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground,
(the whole Earth was watered by underground springs) - 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground--
God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive - a living soul! 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Then God planted a garden in Eden, in the east. He put the Man he had just made in it. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground, trees beautiful to look at and good to eat. The Tree-of-Life was in the middle of the garden, also the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
A river flows out of Eden to water the garden and from there divides into four rivers. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
The first is named Pishon; it flows through Havilah where there is gold. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
The gold of this land is good. The land is also known for a sweet-scented resin and the onyx stone. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.)
The second river is named Gihon; it flows through the land of Cush. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.
The third river is named Hiddekel and flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
God took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
God commanded the Man, "You can eat from any tree in the garden, 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
except from the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil. Don't eat from it. The moment you eat from that tree, you're dead." 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
God said, "It's not good for the Man to be alone; I'll make him a helper, a companion." 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
So God formed from the dirt of the ground all the animals of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the Man to see what he would name them. Whatever the Man called each living creature, that was its name. 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
The Man named the cattle, named the birds of the air, named the wild animals; but he didn't find a suitable companion. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
God put the Man into a deep sleep. As he slept he removed one of his ribs and replaced it with flesh. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
God then used the rib that he had taken from the Man to make Woman and presented her to the Man. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
The Man said, "Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh! Name her Woman for she was made from Man." 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man."
Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his wife. They become one flesh. 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
The two of them, the Man and his Wife, were naked, but they felt no shame. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
