Genesis 24

CJB

BBE

1 By now Avraham was old, advanced in years; and ADONAI had blessed Avraham in everything.
1 Now Abraham was old and far on in years: and the Lord had given him everything in full measure.
2 Avraham said to the servant who had served him the longest, who was in charge of all he owned, "Put your hand under my thigh;
2 And Abraham said to his chief servant, the manager of all his property, Come now, put your hand under my leg:
3 because I want you to swear by ADONAI, God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not choose a wife for my son from among the women of the Kena'ani, among whom I am living;
3 And take an oath by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not get a wife for my son Isaac from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am living;
4 but that you will go to my homeland, to my kinsmen, to choose a wife for my son Yitz'chak."
4 But that you will go into my country and to my relations and get a wife there for my son Isaac.
5 The servant replied, "Suppose the woman isn't willing to follow me to this land. Must I then bring your son back to the land from which you came?"
5 And the servant said, If by chance the woman will not come with me into this land, am I to take your son back again to the land from which you came?
6 Avraham said to him, "See to it that you don't bring my son back there.
6 And Abraham said, Take care that you do not let my son go back to that land.
7 ADONAI, the God of heaven - who took me away from my father's house and away from the land I was born in, who spoke to me and swore to me, 'I will give this land to your descendants'- he will send his angel ahead of you; and you are to bring a wife for my son from there.
7 The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, and made an oath to me, saying, To your seed I will give this land: he will send his angel before you and give you a wife for my son in that land.
8 But if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from your obligation under my oath. Just don't bring my son back there."
8 And if the woman will not come with you, then you are free from this oath; only do not take my son back there.
9 The servant put his hand under the thigh of Avraham his master and swore to him concerning the matter.
9 And the servant put his hand under Abraham's leg, and gave him his oath about this thing.
10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and all kinds of gifts from his master, got up and went to Aram-Naharayim, to Nachor's city.
10 And the servant took ten of his master's camels, and all sorts of good things of his master's, and went to Mesopotamia, to the town of Nahor.
11 Toward evening, when the women go out to draw water, he had the camels kneel down outside the city by the well.
11 And he made the camels take their rest outside the town by the water-spring in the evening, at the time when the women came to get water.
12 He said, "ADONAI, God of my master Avraham, please let me succeed today; and show your grace to my master Avraham.
12 And he said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, let me do well in what I have undertaken this day, and give your mercy to my master Abraham.
13 Here I am, standing by the spring, as the daughters of the townsfolk come out to draw water.
13 See, I am waiting here by the water-spring; and the daughters of the town are coming out to get water:
14 I will say to one of the girls, 'Please lower your jug, so that I can drink.' If she answers, 'Yes, drink; and I will water your camels as well,' then let her be the one you intend for your servant Yitz'chak. This is how I will know that you have shown grace to my master."
14 Now, may the girl to whom I say, Let down your vessel and give me a drink, and who says in answer, Here is a drink for you and let me give water to your camels: may she be the one marked out by you for your servant Isaac: so may I be certain that you have been good to my master Abraham.
15 Before he had finished speaking, Rivkah the daughter of B'tu'el son of Milkah the wife of Nachor Avraham's brother, came out with her jug on her shoulder.
15 And even before his words were ended, Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, who was the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water-vessel on her arm.
16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin, never having had sexual relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her jug and came up.
16 She was a very beautiful girl, a virgin, who had never been touched by a man: and she went down to the spring to get water in her vessel.
17 The servant ran to meet her and said, "Please give me a sip of water from your jug to drink."
17 And the servant came running to her and said, Give me a little water from your vessel.
18 "Drink, my lord," she replied, and immediately lowered her jug onto her arm and let him drink.
18 And she said, Take a drink, my lord: and quickly letting down her vessel onto her hand, she gave him a drink.
19 When she was through letting him drink, she said, "I will also draw water for your camels until they have drunk their fill."
19 And having done so, she said, I will get water for your camels till they have had enough.
20 She quickly emptied her jug into the trough, then ran again to the well to draw water, and kept on drawing water for all his camels.
20 And after putting the water from her vessel into the animals' drinking-place, she went quickly back to the spring and got water for all the camels.
21 The man gazed at her in silence, waiting to find out whether ADONAI had made his trip successful or not.
21 And the man, looking at her, said nothing, waiting to see if the Lord had given his journey a good outcome.
22 When the camels were done drinking, the man took a gold nose-ring weighing one-fifth of an ounce and two gold bracelets weighing four ounces
22 And when the camels had had enough, the man took a gold nose-ring, half a shekel in weight, and two ornaments for her arms of ten shekels weight of gold;
23 and asked, "Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please. Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?"
23 And said to her, Whose daughter are you? is there room in your father's house for us?
24 She answered, "I am the daughter of B'tu'el the son Milkah bore to Nachor,"
24 And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, Nahor's wife.
25 adding, "We have plenty of straw and fodder, and room for staying overnight."
25 And she said, We have a great store of dry grass and cattle-food, and there is room for you.
26 The man bowed his head and prostrated himself before ADONAI.
26 And with bent head the man gave worship to the Lord;
27 Then he said, "Blessed be ADONAI, God of my master Avraham, who has not abandoned his faithful love for my master; because ADONAI has guided me to the house of my master's kinsmen."
27 And said, Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has given a sign that he is good and true to my master, by guiding me straight to the house of my master's family.
28 The girl ran off and told her mother's household what had happened.
28 So the girl went running and took the news of these things to her mother's house
29 Rivkah had a brother named Lavan. When he saw the nose-ring, and the bracelets on his sister's wrists besides, and when he heard his sister Rivkah's report of what the man had said to her, he ran out to the spring and found the man standing there by the camels.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he came out quickly to the man at the water-spring.
30
30 And when he saw the nose-ring and the ornaments on his sister's hands, and when she gave him word of what the man had said to her, then he went out to the man who was waiting with the camels by the water-spring.
31 "Come on in," he said, "you whom ADONAI has blessed! Why are you standing outside when I have made room in the house and prepared a place for the camels?"
31 And he said to him, Come in, you on whom is the blessing of the Lord; why are you waiting outside? for I have made the house ready for you, and a place for the camels.
32 So the man went inside, and while the camels were being unloaded and provided straw and fodder, water was brought for him to wash his feet and the feet of the men with him.
32 Then the man came into the house, and Laban took their cords off the camels and gave them dry grass and food, and he gave to him and the men who were with him water for washing their feet.
33 But when a meal was set before him, he said, "I won't eat until I say what I have to say." Lavan said, "Speak."
33 And meat was put before him, but he said, I will not take food till I have made my business clear to you. And they said, Do so.
34 He said, "I am Avraham's servant.
34 And he said, I am Abraham's servant.
35 ADONAI has greatly blessed my master, so that he has grown wealthy. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, camels and donkeys.
35 The Lord has given my master every blessing, and he has become great: he has given him flocks and herds and silver and gold, and men-servants and women-servants and camels and asses.
36 Sarah my master's wife bore my master a son when she was old, and he has given him everything he has.
36 And when Sarah, my master's wife, was old, she gave birth to a son, to whom he has given all he has.
37 My master made me swear, saying, 'You are not to choose a wife for my son from among the women of the Kena'ani, among whom I am living;
37 And my master made me take an oath, saying, Do not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am living;
38 rather, you are to go to my father's house, to my kinsmen, to choose a wife for my son.'
38 But go to my father's house and to my relations for a wife for my son.
39 I said to my master, 'Suppose the woman isn't willing to follow me.'
39 And I said to my master, What if the woman will not come with me?
40 Avraham answered me, 'ADONAI, in whose presence I live, will send his angel with you to make your trip successful; and you are to pick a wife for my son from my kinsmen in my father's house;
40 And he said, The Lord, whom I have ever kept before me, will send his angel with you, who will make it possible for you to get a wife for my son from my relations and my father's house;
41 this will release you from your obligation under my oath. But if, when you come to my kinsmen, they refuse to give her to you, this too will release you from my oath.'
41 And you will be free from your oath to me when you come to my people; and if they will not give her to you, you will be free from your oath.
42 "So today, I came to the spring and said, 'ADONAI, God of my master Avraham, if you are causing my trip to succeed in its purpose,
42 And I came today to the water-spring, and I said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if it is your purpose to give a good outcome to my journey,
43 then, here I am, standing by the spring. I will say to one of the girls coming out to draw water, "Let me have a sip of water from your jug."
43 Let it come about that, while I am waiting here by the water-spring, if a girl comes to get water and I say to her, Give me a little water from your vessel, and she says,
44 If she answers, "Yes, drink; and I will water your camels as well," then let her be the woman you intend for my master's son.'
44 Take a drink, and I will get water for your camels; let her be the woman marked out by the Lord for my master's son.
45 And even before I had finished speaking to my heart, there came Rivkah, going out with her jug on her shoulder; she went down to the spring and drew water. When I said to her, 'Please let me have a drink,'
45 And even while I was saying this to myself, Rebekah came out with her vessel on her arm; and she went down to the spring to get water; and I said to her, Give me a drink.
46 she immediately lowered the jug from her shoulder and said, 'Drink, and I will water your camels as well.'So I drank, and she had the camels drink too.
46 And straight away she took down her vessel from her arm, and said, Take a drink, and I will get water for your camels.
47 "I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?' and she answered, 'The daughter of B'tu'el son of Nachor, whom Milkah bore to him.'Then I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists,
47 And questioning her, I said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, and Milcah his wife. Then I put the ring on her nose and the ornaments on her hands.
48 bowed my head, prostrated myself before ADONAI and blessed ADONAI, God of my master Avraham, for having led me in the right way to obtain my master's brother's [grand]daughter for his son.
48 And with bent head I gave worship and praise to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, by whom I had been guided in the right way, to get the daughter of my master's brother for his son.
49 "So now if you people intend to show grace and truth to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me, so that I can turn elsewhere."
49 And now, say if you will do what is good and right for my master or not, in order that it may be clear to me what I have to do.
50 Lavan and B'tu'el replied, "Since this comes from ADONAI, we can't say anything to you either bad or good.
50 Then Laban and Bethuel said in answer, This is the Lord's doing: it is not for us to say Yes or No to you.
51 Rivkah is here in front of you; take her and go. Let her be your master's son's wife, as ADONAI has said."
51 See, here is Rebekah: take her and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as the Lord has said.
52 When Avraham's servant heard what they said, he prostrated himself on the ground to ADONAI.
52 And at these words, Abraham's servant went down on his face and gave praise to the Lord.
53 Then the servant brought out silver and gold jewelry, together with clothing, and gave them to Rivkah. He also gave valuable gifts to her brother and mother.
53 Then he took jewels of silver and jewels of gold and fair robes and gave them to Rebekah: and he gave things of value to her mother and her brother.
54 He and his men then ate and drank and stayed the night. In the morning they got up; and he said, "Send me off to my master."
54 Then he and the men who were with him had food and drink, and took their rest there that night; and in the morning he got up, and said, Let me now go back to my master.
55 Her brother and mother said, "Let the girl stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that, she will go."
55 But her brother and her mother said, Let the girl be with us a week or ten days, and then she may go.
56 He answered them, "Don't delay me, since ADONAI has made my trip successful, but let me go back to my master."
56 And he said, Do not keep me; the Lord has given a good outcome to my journey; let me now go back to my master.
57 They said, "We will call the girl and see what she says."
57 And they said, We will send for the girl, and let her make the decision.
58 They called Rivkah and asked her, "Will you go with this man?" and she replied, "I will."
58 And they sent for Rebekah and said to her, Are you ready to go with this man? And she said, I am ready.
59 So they sent their sister Rivkah away, with her nurse, Avraham's servant and his men.
59 So they sent their sister Rebekah and her servant with Abraham's servant and his men.
60 They blessed Rivkah with these words: "Our sister, may you be the mother of millions, and may your descendants possess the cities of those who hate them."
60 And they gave Rebekah their blessing, saying, O sister, may you be the mother of thousands and ten thousands; and may your seed overcome all those who make war against them.
61 Then Rivkah and her maids mounted the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rivkah and went on his way.
61 So Rebekah and her servant-women went with the man, seated on the camels; and so the servant took Rebekah and went on his way.
62 Meanwhile, Yitz'chak, one evening after coming along the road from Be'er-Lachai-Ro'i - he was living in the Negev -
62 Now Isaac had come through the waste land to Beer-lahai-roi; for he was living in the South.
63 went out walking in the field; and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.
63 And when the evening was near, he went wandering out into the fields, and lifting up his eyes he saw camels coming.
64 Rivkah too looked up; and when she saw Yitz'chak, she quickly dismounted the camel.
64 And when Rebekah, looking up, saw Isaac, she got down from her camel,
65 She said to the servant,"Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?"When the servant replied, "It's my master," she took her veil and covered herself.
65 And said to the servant, Who is that man coming to us through the field? And the servant said, It is my master: then she took her veil, covering her face with it.
66 The servant told Yitz'chak everything he had done.
66 Then the servant gave Isaac the story of all he had done.
67 Then Yitz'chak brought her into his mother Sarah's tent and took Rivkah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. Thus was Yitz'chak comforted for the loss of his mother.
67 And Isaac took Rebekah into his tent and she became his wife; and in his love for her, Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
