The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. 1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman.
Arise, go to Padan-Aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father, and take a wife thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother. 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
And the Almighty God bless thee, and make thee fruitful and multiply thee, that thou mayest become a company of peoples. 3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.
And may he give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee and to thy seed with thee, in order that thou mayest possess the land of thy sojourning, which God gave to Abraham! 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham."
And Isaac sent away Jacob; and he went to Padan-Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebecca, Jacob's and Esau's mother. 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-Aram, to take a wife thence, blessing him, and giving him a charge saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; 6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman,"
and [that] Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padan-Aram. 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.
And Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the sight of Isaac his father. 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac;
And Esau went to Ishmael, and took, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife. 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.
And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went towards Haran. 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.
And he lighted on a certain place, and lodged there, because the sun had set. And he took [one] of the stones of the place, and made [it] his pillow, and lay down in that place. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to the heavens. And behold, angels of God ascended and descended upon it. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
And behold, Jehovah stood above it. And he said, I am Jehovah, the God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land on which thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed. 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all [places] to which thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee until I have done what I have spoken to thee of. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
And Jacob awoke from his sleep, and said, Surely Jehovah is in this place, and I knew [it] not. 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."
And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."
And Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had made his pillow, and set it up [for] a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.
And he called the name of that place Beth-el; but the name of that city was Luz at the first. 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.
And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and keep me on this road that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and a garment to put on, 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear
and I come again to my father's house in peace -- then shall Jehovah be my God. 21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God
And this stone, which I have set up [for] a pillar, shall be God's house; and of all that thou wilt give me I will without fail give the tenth to thee. 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
