The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. 1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her. 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her.
And his soul fastened on Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke consolingly to the maiden. 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.
And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Take me this girl as wife. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the fields, and Jacob said nothing until they came. 5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.
And Hamor the father of Shechem came out to Jacob, to speak to him. 6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.
And the sons of Jacob came from the fields when they heard [it]; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought what was disgraceful in Israel, in lying with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done. 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done.
And Hamor spoke to them, saying, My son Shechem's soul cleaves to your daughter: I pray you, give her to him as wife. 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
And make marriages with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you. 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
And dwell with us, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade in it, and get yourselves possessions in it. 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."
And Shechem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes; and what ye shall say to me I will give. 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.
Impose on me very much as dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say to me; but give me the maiden as wife. 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife."
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke -- because he had defiled Dinah their sister -- 13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.
and said to them, We cannot do this, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach to us. 14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.
But only in this will we consent to you, if ye will be as we, that every male of you be circumcised; 15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.
then will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and be one people. 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.
But if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and go away. 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go."
And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son. 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
And the youth did not delay to do this, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. And he was honourable above all in the house of his father. 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying, 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen.
These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it. And the land -- behold, it is of wide extent before them. We will take their daughters as wives, and give them our daughters. 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.
But only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people -- if every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised. 22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.
Their cattle, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us. 23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."
And all that went out at the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised -- all that went out at the gate of his city. 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.
And Hamor and Shechem his son they slew with the edge of the sword; and took Dinah out of Shechem's house; and went out. 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.
Their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what [was] in the city, and what [was] in the field they took; 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.
and all their goods, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered them, and all that was in the houses. 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.
And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, in that ye make me odious among the inhabitants of the land -- among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few men in number, and they will gather themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."
And they said, Should people deal with our sister as with a harlot? 31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
