Lexham English Bible (LEB) New International Version (NIV)
Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. 1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. And he took her and lay with her and raped her. 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her.
And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke {tenderly} to the girl. 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.
So Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying, "Get this girl for me as a wife." 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."
And Jacob heard that Dinah his daughter had been defiled, but his sons were with his flocks in the field. And Jacob kept silent until they came. 5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.
And Hamor, father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him. 6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.
And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard [it]. And the men were distressed and very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by having sexual relations with the daughter of Jacob--{something that} should not be done. 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done.
And Hamor spoke with them saying, "Shechem my son {is in love with} your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife. 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
Make marriages with us. Give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
You shall dwell with us and the land shall be before you; settle and trade in it, and acquire [property] in it." 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."
Then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will do. 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.
{Make the bride price and gift as high as you like}; I will give what you say to me. But give me the girl as a wife." 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife."
Then the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor speaking deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. 13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.
And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who [is] uncircumcised, for that [is] a disgrace for us. 14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.
Only on this [condition] will we give consent to you; if you will become like us--every male among you to be circumcised. 15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.
Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take for ourselves your daughters, and we will live with you and become one family. 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.
But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughters and we will go." 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go."
And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem, the son of Hamor. 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he wanted the daughter of Jacob. Now he [was] the most honored of his father's house. 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.
Then Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city, saying, 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen.
"These men [are] at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and let them trade in it. Now, behold, the land is {broad enough for them}. Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give our daughters to them. 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.
Only on this [condition] will they give consent to us, to live with us [and] to become one family--when every male among us [is] circumcised as they are circumcised. 22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.
Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals [be] ours? Only let us give consent to them so they will live among us." 23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."
And all those who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and Shechem. Every male was circumcised, all those who went out of the gate of his city. 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
And it happened [that] on the third day, while they were in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, each took his sword and came against the unsuspecting city and killed all the males. 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shechem and went out. 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.
The [other] sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.
They took their flocks and their cattle and their donkeys, and whatever [was] in the field. 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.
They captured and plundered all that [was] in the houses--all their wealth, their little ones, and their women. 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me, making me stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites! I [am] few in number! If they gather against me and attack me, I will be destroyed--I and my household!" 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."
But they said, "Shall he treat our sister like a prostitute?" 31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
