Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt, and Pot'i-phar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ish'maelites who had brought him down there. 1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian, 2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
and his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hands. 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did,
So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.
From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had, in house and field. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.
So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge; and having him he had no concern for anything but the food which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome and good-looking. 6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
And after a time his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, "Lie with me." 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"
But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Lo, having me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my hand; 8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.
he is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"
And although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her. 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.
she caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me." But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and got out of the house. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had fled out of the house, 13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought among us a Hebrew to insult us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice; 14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.
and when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled and got out of the house." 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."
Then she laid up his garment by her until his master came home, 16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.
and she told him the same story, saying, "The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought among us, came in to me to insult me; 17 Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.
but as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled out of the house." 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."
When his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, "This is the way your servant treated me," his anger was kindled. 19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger.
And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. 20 Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison,
But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's care all the prisoners who were in the prison; and whatever was done there, he was the doer of it; 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.
the keeper of the prison paid no heed to anything that was in Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
