Holman Christian Standard (CSB) New International Version (NIV)
Adam knew his wife Eve intimately, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the Lord's help." 1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."
Then she also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of a flock, but Cain cultivated the land. 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the Lord. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
And Abel also presented [an offering]-some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he was downcast. 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you furious? And why are you downcast? 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
If you do right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must master it." 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's guardian?" 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Then He said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground! 10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
So now you are cursed [with alienation] from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
If you work the land, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth." 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
But Cain answered the Lord, "My punishment is too great to bear! 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.
Since You are banishing me today from the soil, and I must hide myself from Your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me." 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
Then the Lord replied to him, "In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." And He placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him. 15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
Then Cain went out from the Lord's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Cain knew his wife intimately, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son. 17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah. 19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of the nomadic herdsmen. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
His brother was named Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the flute. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words. For I killed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me. 23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
If Cain is to be avenged seven times over, then for Lamech it will be seventy-seven times! 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."
Adam knew his wife intimately again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for [she said,] "God has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." 25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord. 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.
