New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, "I have acquired a man from the Lord." 1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."
Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
So the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
And He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. 10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth." 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
And Cain said to the Lord, "My punishment is greater than I can bear! 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.
Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me." 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
And the Lord said to him, "Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him. 15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son--Enoch. 17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. 19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
Then Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. 23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed." 25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord. 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.
