| King James Version (KJV) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived , and bare Cain, and said , I have gotten a man from the LORD. | 1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man." |
| 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. | 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. |
| 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. | 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. |
| 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: | 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, |
| 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect . And Cain was very wroth , and his countenance fell . | 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. |
| 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth ? and why is thy countenance fallen ? | 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? |
| 7 If thou doest well , shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well , sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. | 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." |
| 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him . | 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. |
| 9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said , I know not: Am I my brother's keeper ? | 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" |
| 10 And he said , What hast thou done ? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. | 10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. |
| 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; | 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
| 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. | 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth." |
| 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear . | 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear. |
| 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid ; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass , that every one that findeth me shall slay me . | 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." |
| 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. | 15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. |
| 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. | 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
