Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. 1 "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Ba'als, and burning incense to idols. 2 But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.
Yet it was I who taught E'phraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. 3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them.
I led them with cords of compassion, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one, who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them. 4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love; I lifted the yoke from their neck and bent down to feed them.
They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. 5 "Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent?
The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them in their fortresses. 6 Swords will flash in their cities, will destroy the bars of their gates and put an end to their plans.
My people are bent on turning away from me; so they are appointed to the yoke, and none shall remove it. 7 My people are determined to turn from me. Even if they call to the Most High, he will by no means exalt them.
How can I give you up, O E'phraim! How can I hand you over, O Israel! How can I make you like Admah! How can I treat you like Zeboi'im! My heart recoils within me, my compassion grows warm and tender. 8 "How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused.
I will not execute my fierce anger, I will not again destroy E'phraim; for I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come to destroy. 9 I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim. For I am God, and not man-- the Holy One among you. I will not come in wrath.
They shall go after the LORD, he will roar like a lion; yea, he will roar, and his sons shall come trembling from the west; 10 They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.
they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the LORD. 11 They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, like doves from Assyria. I will settle them in their homes," declares the LORD.
E'phraim has encompassed me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah is still known by God, and is faithful to the Holy One. 12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, the house of Israel with deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy One.
