Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: " I have nourished and brought up children, And they have rebelled against Me; 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.
The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master's crib; But Israel does not know, My people do not consider." 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand."
Alas, sinful nation, A people laden with iniquity, A brood of evildoers, Children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have provoked to anger The Holy One of Israel, They have turned away backward. 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.
Why should you be stricken again? You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, And the whole heart faints. 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.
From the sole of the foot even to the head, There is no soundness in it, But wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; They have not been closed or bound up, Or soothed with ointment. 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil.
Your country is desolate, Your cities are burned with fire; Strangers devour your land in your presence; And it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
So the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, As a hut in a garden of cucumbers, As a besieged city. 8 The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege.
Unless the Lord of hosts Had left to us a very small remnant, We would have become like Sodom, We would have been made like Gomorrah. 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.
Hear the word of the Lord, You rulers of Sodom; Give ear to the law of our God, You people of Gomorrah: 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
"To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?" Says the Lord. "I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats. 11 "The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
"When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from your hand, To trample My courts? 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?
Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies-- I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting. 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them. 14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood;
"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong,
Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow. 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
"Come now, and let us reason together," Says the Lord, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. 18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land;
But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword"; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
How the faithful city has become a harlot! It was full of justice; Righteousness lodged in it, But now murderers. 21 See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!
Your silver has become dross, Your wine mixed with water. 22 Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your princes are rebellious, And companions of thieves; Everyone loves bribes, And follows after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, Nor does the cause of the widow come before them. 23 Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.
Therefore the Lord says, The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, "Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries, And take vengeance on My enemies. 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge myself on my enemies.
I will turn My hand against you, And thoroughly purge away your dross, And take away all your alloy. 25 I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.
I will restore your judges as at the first, And your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city." 26 I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City."
Zion shall be redeemed with justice, And her penitents with righteousness. 27 Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness.
The destruction of transgressors and of sinners shall be together, And those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed. 28 But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish.
For they shall be ashamed of the terebinth trees Which you have desired; And you shall be embarrassed because of the gardens Which you have chosen. 29 "You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen.
For you shall be as a terebinth whose leaf fades, And as a garden that has no water. 30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water.
The strong shall be as tinder, And the work of it as a spark; Both will burn together, And no one shall quench them. 31 The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire."
