New Revised Standard (NRS) New International Version (NIV)
For now the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and staff— all support of bread, and all support of water— 1 See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
warrior and soldier, judge and prophet, diviner and elder, 2 the hero and warrior, the judge and prophet, the soothsayer and elder,
captain of fifty and dignitary, counselor and skillful magician and expert enchanter. 3 the captain of fifty and man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
And I will make boys their princes, and babes shall rule over them. 4 I will make boys their officials; mere children will govern them.
The people will be oppressed, everyone by another and everyone by a neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the base to the honorable. 5 People will oppress each other-- man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the base against the honorable.
Someone will even seize a relative, a member of the clan, saying, "You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule." 6 A man will seize one of his brothers at his father's home, and say, "You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!"
But the other will cry out on that day, saying, "I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people." 7 But in that day he will cry out, "I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people."
For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord, defying his glorious presence. 8 Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
The look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom, they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. 9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
Tell the innocent how fortunate they are, for they shall eat the fruit of their labors. 10 Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
Woe to the guilty! How unfortunate they are, for what their hands have done shall be done to them. 11 Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.
My people—children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your leaders mislead you, and confuse the course of your paths. 12 Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. O my people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.
The Lord rises to argue his case; he stands to judge the peoples. 13 The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
The Lord enters into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: It is you who have devoured the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. 14 The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: "It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor? says the Lord God of hosts. 15 What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?" declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
The Lord said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet; 16 The LORD says, "The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, tripping along with mincing steps, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
the Lord will afflict with scabs the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will lay bare their secret parts. 17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald."
In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; 18 In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarfs; 19 the earrings and bracelets and veils,
the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; 20 the headdresses and ankle chains and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
the signet rings and nose rings; 21 the signet rings and nose rings,
the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
the garments of gauze, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
Instead of perfume there will be a stench; and instead of a sash, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a binding of sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame. 24 Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
Your men shall fall by the sword and your warriors in battle. 25 Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
And her gates shall lament and mourn; ravaged, she shall sit upon the ground. 26 The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
