| Third Millennium Bible (TMB) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people! let the earth hear, and all that is therein, the world, and all things that come forth from it. | 1 Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it! |
| 2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and His fury upon all their armies; He hath utterly destroyed them; He hath delivered them to the slaughter. | 2 The LORD is angry with all nations; his wrath is upon all their armies. He will totally destroy them, he will give them over to slaughter. |
| 3 Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stench shall come up out of their carcasses, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. | 3 Their slain will be thrown out, their dead bodies will send up a stench; the mountains will be soaked with their blood. |
| 4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll; and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. | 4 All the stars of the heavens will be dissolved and the sky rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree. |
| 5 "For My sword shall be bathed in heaven; behold, it shall come down upon Edom and upon the people of My curse in judgment." | 5 My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; see, it descends in judgment on Edom, the people I have totally destroyed. |
| 6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood; it is made fat with fatness and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. | 6 The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood, it is covered with fat-- the blood of lambs and goats, fat from the kidneys of rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah and a great slaughter in Edom. |
| 7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. | 7 And the wild oxen will fall with them, the bull calves and the great bulls. Their land will be drenched with blood, and the dust will be soaked with fat. |
| 8 For it is the day of the LORD's vengeance, and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion. | 8 For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion's cause. |
| 9 And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. | 9 Edom's streams will be turned into pitch, her dust into burning sulfur; her land will become blazing pitch! |
| 10 It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever. | 10 It will not be quenched night and day; its smoke will rise forever. From generation to generation it will lie desolate; no one will ever pass through it again. |
| 11 But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it; and He shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion and the stones of emptiness. | 11 The desert owl and screech owl will possess it; the great owl and the raven will nest there. God will stretch out over Edom the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of desolation. |
| 12 They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. | 12 Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom, all her princes will vanish away. |
| 13 And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof; and it shall be a habitation of dragons and a court for owls. | 13 Thorns will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her strongholds. She will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls. |
| 14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there and find for herself a place of rest. | 14 Desert creatures will meet with hyenas, and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures will also repose and find for themselves places of rest. |
| 15 There shall the great owl make her nest, and lay and hatch and gather under her shadow; there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate. | 15 The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate. |
| 16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: No one of these shall fail, none shall lack her mate; for My mouth, it hath commanded, and His Spirit, it hath gathered them. | 16 Look in the scroll of the LORD and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together. |
| 17 And He hath cast the lot for them, and His hand hath divided it unto them by line; they shall possess it for ever; from generation to generation shall they dwell therein. | 17 He allots their portions; his hand distributes them by measure. They will possess it forever and dwell there from generation to generation. |
