Keep silence before me, islands; and let the peoples renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak; let us come near together to judgment. 1 "Be silent before me, you islands! Let the nations renew their strength! Let them come forward and speak; let us meet together at the place of judgment.
Who has raised up one from the east, whom he calls in righteousness to his foot? he gives nations before him, and makes him rule over kings; he gives them as the dust to his sword, as the driven stubble to his bow. 2 "Who has stirred up one from the east, calling him in righteousness to his service ? He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him. He turns them to dust with his sword, to windblown chaff with his bow.
He pursues them, and passes on safely, even by a way that he had not gone with his feet. 3 He pursues them and moves on unscathed, by a path his feet have not traveled before.
Who has worked and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, the first, and with the last, I am he. 4 Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD--with the first of them and with the last--I am he."
The isles have seen, and fear; the ends of the eretz tremble; they draw near, and come. 5 The islands have seen it and fear; the ends of the earth tremble. They approach and come forward;

So the carpenter encourages the goldsmith, [and] he who smoothes with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, It is good; and he fastens it with nails, that is should not be moved. 7 The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer spurs on him who strikes the anvil. He says of the welding, "It is good." He nails down the idol so it will not topple.
But you, Yisra'el, my servant, Ya`akov whom I have chosen, the seed of Avraham my friend, 8 "But you, O Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend,
you whom I have taken hold of from the ends of the eretz, and called from the corners of it, and said to you, You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you away; 9 I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.
Don't you be afraid, for I am with you; don't be dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. 10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Behold, all those who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded: those who strive with you shall be as nothing, and shall perish. 11 "All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.
You shall seek them, and shall not find them, even those who contend with you: those who war against you shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nothing. 12 Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all.
For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, Don't be afraid; I will help you. 13 For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
Don't be afraid, you worm Ya`akov, and you men of Yisra'el; I will help you, says the LORD, and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Yisra'el. 14 Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel, for I myself will help you," declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
Behold, I have made you [to be] a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth; you shall thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shall make the hills as chaff. 15 "See, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff.
You shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; and you shall rejoice in the LORD, you shall glory in the Holy One of Yisra'el. 16 You will winnow them, the wind will pick them up, and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the LORD and glory in the Holy One of Israel.
The poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue fails for thirst; I, the LORD, will answer them, I, the God of Yisra'el, will not forsake them. 17 "The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
I will open rivers on the bare heights, and springs in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. 18 I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.
I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the shittim, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, the pine, and the box tree together: 19 I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set pines in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together,
that they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD has done this, and the Holy One of Yisra'el has created it. 20 so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.
Produce your cause, says the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, says the King of Ya`akov. 21 "Present your case," says the LORD. "Set forth your arguments," says Jacob's King.
Let them bring forth, and declare to us what shall happen: declare you the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or show us things to come. 22 "Bring in [ your idols] to tell us what is going to happen. Tell us what the former things were, so that we may consider them and know their final outcome. Or declare to us the things to come,
Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods: yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and see it together. 23 tell us what the future holds, so we may know that you are gods. Do something, whether good or bad, so that we will be dismayed and filled with fear.
Behold, you are of nothing, and your work is of nothing; an abomination is he who chooses you. 24 But you are less than nothing and your works are utterly worthless; he who chooses you is detestable.
I have raised up one from the north, and he has come; from the rising of the sun one who calls on my name: and he shall come on rulers as on mortar, and as the potter treads clay. 25 "I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes-- one from the rising sun who calls on my name. He treads on rulers as if they were mortar, as if he were a potter treading the clay.
Who has declared it from the beginning, that we may know? and before, that we may say, [He is] right? yes, there is none who declares, yes, there is none who shows, yes, there is none who hears your words. 26 Who told of this from the beginning, so we could know, or beforehand, so we could say, 'He was right'? No one told of this, no one foretold it, no one heard any words from you.
[I am the] first [who says] to Tziyon, Behold, behold them; and I will give to Yerushalayim one who brings good news. 27 I was the first to tell Zion, 'Look, here they are!' I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good tidings.
When I look, there is no man: even among them there is no counselor who, when I ask of them, can answer a word. 28 I look but there is no one-- no one among them to give counsel, no one to give answer when I ask them.
Behold, all of them, their works are vanity [and] nothing; their molten images are wind and confusion. 29 See, they are all false! Their deeds amount to nothing; their images are but wind and confusion.
