New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
The idols of Babylon, Bel and Nebo, are being hauled away on ox carts. But look! The beasts are staggering under the weight! 1 Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low; their idols are borne by beasts of burden. The images that are carried about are burdensome, a burden for the weary.
Both the idols and the ones carrying them are bowed down. The gods cannot protect the people, and the people cannot protect the gods. They go off into captivity together. 2 They stoop and bow down together; unable to rescue the burden, they themselves go off into captivity.
"Listen to me, all you who are left in Israel. I created you and have cared for you since before you were born. 3 "Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth.
I will be your God throughout your lifetime -- until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you." 4 Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
"To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal? 5 "To whom will you compare me or count me equal? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared?
Some people pour out their silver and gold and hire a craftsman to make a god from it. Then they bow down and worship it! 6 Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it.
They carry it around on their shoulders, and when they set it down, it stays there. It cannot even move! And when someone prays to it, there is no answer. It has no power to get anyone out of trouble." 7 They lift it to their shoulders and carry it; they set it up in its place, and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move. Though one cries out to it, it does not answer; it cannot save him from his troubles.
"Do not forget this, you guilty ones. 8 "Remember this, fix it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels.
And do not forget the things I have done throughout history. For I am God -- I alone! I am God, and there is no one else like me. 9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.
Only I can tell you what is going to happen even before it happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. 10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.
I will call a swift bird of prey from the east -- a leader from a distant land who will come and do my bidding. I have said I would do it, and I will. 11 From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.
Listen to me, you stubborn, evil people! 12 Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, you who are far from righteousness.
For I am ready to set things right, not in the distant future, but right now! I am ready to save Jerusalem and give my glory to Israel." 13 I am bringing my righteousness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to Zion, my splendor to Israel.
