New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
"Listen to me, O family of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and born into the family of Judah. Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and call on the God of Israel. You don't follow through on any of your promises, 1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel-- but not in truth or righteousness--
even though you call yourself the holy city and talk about depending on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD Almighty. 2 you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel-- the LORD Almighty is his name:
Time and again I warned you about what was going to happen in the future. Then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true. 3 I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
"I know how stubborn and obstinate you are. Your necks are as unbending as iron. You are as hardheaded as bronze. 4 For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze.
That is why I told you ahead of time what I was going to do. That way, you could never say, 'My idols did it. My wooden image and metal god commanded it to happen!' 5 Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.'
You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled, but you refuse to admit it. Now I will tell you new things I have not mentioned before, secrets you have not yet heard. 6 You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? "From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you.
They are brand new, not things from the past. So you cannot say, 'We knew that all the time!' 7 They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.'
"Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new, for I know so well what traitors you are. You have been rebels from your earliest childhood, rotten through and through. 8 You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth.
Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name, I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out. 9 For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off.
I have refined you but not in the way silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering. 10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
I will rescue you for my sake -- yes, for my own sake! That way, the pagan nations will not be able to claim that their gods have conquered me. I will not let them have my glory! 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another.
"Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my chosen one! I alone am God, the First and the Last. 12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last.
It was my hand that laid the foundations of the earth. The palm of my right hand spread out the heavens above. I spoke, and they came into being. 13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together.
"Have any of your idols ever told you this? Come, all of you, and listen: 'The LORD has chosen Cyrus as his ally. He will use him to put an end to the empire of Babylon, destroying the Babylonian armies.' 14 "Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of [the idols] has foretold these things? The LORD's chosen ally will carry out his purpose against Babylon; his arm will be against the Babylonians.
I have said it: I am calling Cyrus! I will send him on this errand and will help him succeed. 15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he will succeed in his mission.
Come closer and listen. I have always told you plainly what would happen so you would have no trouble understanding."And now the Sovereign LORD and his Spirit have sent me with this message: 16 "Come near me and listen to this: "From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there." And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit.
"The LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, says: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is good and leads you along the paths you should follow. 17 This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling like waves. 18 If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
Then you would have become as numerous as the sands along the seashore -- too many to count! There would have been no need for your destruction." 19 Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me."
Yet even now, be free from your captivity! Leave Babylon and the Babylonians, singing as you go! Shout to the ends of the earth that the LORD has redeemed his servants, the people of Israel. 20 Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob."
They were not thirsty when he led them through the desert. He divided the rock, and water gushed out for them to drink. 21 They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and water gushed out.
"But there is no peace for the wicked," says the LORD. 22 "There is no peace," says the LORD, "for the wicked."
