Common English Bible (CEB) New International Version (NIV)
What is the source of conflict among you? What is the source of your disputes? Don't they come from your cravings that are at war in your own lives? 1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?
You long for something you don't have, so you commit murder. You are jealous for something you can't get, so you struggle and fight. You don't have because you don't ask. 2 You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.
You ask and don't have because you ask with evil intentions, to waste it on your own cravings. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
You unfaithful people! Don't you know that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? 4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
Or do you suppose that scripture is meaningless? Doesn't God long for our faithfulness in the life he has given to us? 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?
But he gives us more grace. This is why it says, God stands against the proud, but favors the humble. 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Cry out in sorrow, mourn, and weep! Let your laughter become mourning and your joy become sadness. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Brothers and sisters, don't say evil things about each other. Whoever insults or criticizes a brother or sister insults and criticizes the Law. If you find fault with the Law, you are not a doer of the Law but a judge over it. 11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
There is only one lawgiver and judge, and he is able to save and to destroy. But you who judge your neighbor, who are you? 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor?
Pay attention, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such-and-such a town. We will stay there a year, buying and selling, and making a profit." 13 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money."
You don't really know about tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for only a short while before it vanishes. 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Here's what you ought to say: "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."
But now you boast and brag, and all such boasting is evil. 16 As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.
It is a sin when someone knows the right thing to do and doesn't do it. 17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.
