GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Aren't they caused by the selfish desires that fight to control you? 1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?
You want what you don't have, so you commit murder. You're determined to have things, but you can't get what you want. You quarrel and fight. You don't have the things you want, because you don't pray for them. 2 You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.
When you pray for things, you don't get them because you want them for the wrong reason--for your own pleasure. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
You unfaithful people! Don't you know that love for this [evil] world is hatred toward God? Whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God. 4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
Do you think this passage means nothing? It says, "The Spirit that lives in us wants us to be his own." 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?
But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, "God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people." 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
So place yourselves under God's authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners, and clear your minds, you doubters. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Be miserable, mourn, and cry. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into gloom. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves in the Lord's presence. Then he will give you a high position. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Brothers and sisters, stop slandering each other. Those who slander and judge other believers slander and judge God's teachings. If you judge God's teachings, you are no longer following them. Instead, you are judging them. 11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
There is only one teacher and judge. He is able to save or destroy you. So who are you to judge your neighbor? 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor?
Pay attention to this! You're saying, "Today or tomorrow we will go into some city, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money." 13 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money."
You don't know what will happen tomorrow. What is life? You are a mist that is seen for a moment and then disappears. 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Instead, you should say, "If the Lord wants us to, we will live and carry out our plans." 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."
However, you brag because you're arrogant. All such bragging is evil. 16 As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.
Whoever knows what is right but doesn't do it is sinning. 17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.
