English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.
Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 16 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
