What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 16 If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." 18 But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.
But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 20 You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless ?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.
You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
