Flee for safety, you children of Binyamin, out of the midst of Yerushalayim, and blow the shofar in Tekoa, and raise up a signal on Beit-Hakkerem; for evil looks forth from the north, and a great destruction. 1 "Flee for safety, people of Benjamin! Flee from Jerusalem! Sound the trumpet in Tekoa! Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! For disaster looms out of the north, even terrible destruction.
The comely and delicate one, the daughter of Tziyon, will I cut off. 2 I will destroy the Daughter of Zion, so beautiful and delicate.
Shepherds with their flocks shall come to her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed everyone in his place. 3 Shepherds with their flocks will come against her; they will pitch their tents around her, each tending his own portion."
Prepare you war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe to us! for the day declines, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out. 4 "Prepare for battle against her! Arise, let us attack at noon! But, alas, the daylight is fading, and the shadows of evening grow long.
Arise, and let us go up by night, and let us destroy her palaces. 5 So arise, let us attack at night and destroy her fortresses!"
For thus has the LORD of Hosts said, Hew you down trees, and cast up a mound against Yerushalayim: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her. 6 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Cut down the trees and build siege ramps against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; it is filled with oppression.
As a well casts forth its waters, so she casts forth her wickedness: violence and destruction is heard in her; before me continually is sickness and wounds. 7 As a well pours out its water, so she pours out her wickedness. Violence and destruction resound in her; her sickness and wounds are ever before me.
Be instructed, Yerushalayim, lest my soul be alienated from you; lest I make you a desolation, a land not inhabited. 8 Take warning, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so no one can live in it."
Thus says the LORD of Hosts, They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Yisra'el as a vine: turn again your hand as a grape-gatherer into the baskets. 9 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Let them glean the remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine; pass your hand over the branches again, like one gathering grapes."
To whom shall I speak and testify, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they can't listen: behold, the word of the LORD is become to them a reproach; they have no delight in it. 10 To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.
Therefore I am full of the wrath of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: pour it out on the children in the street, and on the assembly of young men together; for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him who is full of days. 11 But I am full of the wrath of the LORD, and I cannot hold it in. "Pour it out on the children in the street and on the young men gathered together; both husband and wife will be caught in it, and the old, those weighed down with years.
Their houses shall be turned to others, their fields and their wives together; for I will stretch out my hand on the inhabitants of the land, says the LORD. 12 Their houses will be turned over to others, together with their fields and their wives, when I stretch out my hand against those who live in the land," declares the LORD.
For from the least of them even to the greatest of them everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the Kohen everyone deals falsely. 13 "From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.
They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Shalom, shalom; when there is no shalom. 14 They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace.
Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, says the LORD. 15 Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them," says the LORD.
Thus says the LORD, Stand you in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk [therein]. 16 This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it.'
I set watchmen over you, [saying], Listen to the sound of the shofar; but they said, We will not listen. 17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet!' But you said, 'We will not listen.'
Therefore hear, you nations, and know, congregation, what is among them. 18 Therefore hear, O nations; observe, O witnesses, what will happen to them.
Hear, eretz: behold, I will bring evil on this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. 19 Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.
To what purpose comes there to me frankincense from Sheva, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing to me. 20 What do I care about incense from Sheba or sweet calamus from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please me."
Therefore thus says the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumbling-blocks before this people; and the fathers and the sons together shall stumble against them; the neighbor and his friend shall perish. 21 Therefore this is what the LORD says: "I will put obstacles before this people. Fathers and sons alike will stumble over them; neighbors and friends will perish."
Thus says the LORD, Behold, a people comes from the north country; and a great nation shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the eretz. 22 This is what the LORD says: "Look, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is being stirred up from the ends of the earth.
They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Tziyon. 23 They are armed with bow and spear; they are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, O Daughter of Zion."
We have heard the report of it; our hands wax feeble: anguish has taken hold of us, [and] pangs as of a woman in travail. 24 We have heard reports about them, and our hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a woman in labor.
Don't go forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy, [and] terror, are on every side. 25 Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.
Daughter of my people, gird you with sackcloth, and wallow yourself in ashes: make you mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come on us. 26 O my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.
I have made you a tester of metals [and] a fortress among my people; that you may know and try their way. 27 "I have made you a tester of metals and my people the ore, that you may observe and test their ways.
They are all grievous rebels, going about with slanders; they are brass and iron: they all of them deal corruptly. 28 They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly.
The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed of the fire: in vain do they go on refining; for the wicked are not plucked away. 29 The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the wicked are not purged out.
Refuse silver shall men them, because the LORD has rejected them. 30 They are called rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them."
