Then Job answered: 1 Then Job replied:
"No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you. 2 "Doubtless you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!
But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these? 3 But I have a mind as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know all these things?
I am a laughingstock to my friends; I, who called upon God and he answered me, a just and blameless man, am a laughingstock. 4 "I have become a laughingstock to my friends, though I called upon God and he answered-- a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless!
In the thought of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for those whose feet slip. 5 Men at ease have contempt for misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.
The tents of robbers are at peace, and those who provoke God are secure, who bring their god in their hand. 6 The tents of marauders are undisturbed, and those who provoke God are secure-- those who carry their god in their hands.
"But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; 7 "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
or the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. 8 or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you.
Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? 9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind. 10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
Does not the ear try words as the palate tastes food? 11 Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes food?
Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. 12 Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?
"With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding. 13 "To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.
If he tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open. 14 What he tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man he imprisons cannot be released.
If he withholds the waters, they dry up; if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land. 15 If he holds back the waters, there is drought; if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.
With him are strength and wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are his. 16 To him belong strength and victory; both deceived and deceiver are his.
He leads counselors away stripped, and judges he makes fools. 17 He leads counselors away stripped and makes fools of judges.
He looses the bonds of kings, and binds a waistcloth on their loins. 18 He takes off the shackles put on by kings and ties a loincloth around their waist.
He leads priests away stripped, and overthrows the mighty. 19 He leads priests away stripped and overthrows men long established.
He deprives of speech those who are trusted, and takes away the discernment of the elders. 20 He silences the lips of trusted advisers and takes away the discernment of elders.
He pours contempt on princes, and looses the belt of the strong. 21 He pours contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty.
He uncovers the deeps out of darkness, and brings deep darkness to light. 22 He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into the light.
He makes nations great, and he destroys them: he enlarges nations, and leads them away. 23 He makes nations great, and destroys them; he enlarges nations, and disperses them.
He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, and makes them wander in a pathless waste. 24 He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason; he sends them wandering through a trackless waste.
They grope in the dark without light; and he makes them stagger like a drunken man. 25 They grope in darkness with no light; he makes them stagger like drunkards.
