Job 22 NAS/NIV - Online Parallel Bible

New American Standard (NAS) New International Version (NIV)
Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded , 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
"Can a vigorous man be of use to God, Or a wise man be useful to himself? 2 "Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise man benefit him?
"Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or profit if you make your ways perfect? 3 What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless?
"Is it because of your reverence that He reproves you, That He enters into judgment against you? 4 "Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you?
"Is not your wickedness great, And your iniquities without end? 5 Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless?
"For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause, And stripped men naked. 6 You demanded security from your brothers for no reason; you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked.
"To the weary you have given no water to drink, And from the hungry you have withheld bread. 7 You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,
"But the earth belongs to the mighty man, And the honorable man dwells in it. 8 though you were a powerful man, owning land-- an honored man, living on it.
"You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the orphans has been crushed. 9 And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless.
"Therefore snares surround you, And sudden dread terrifies you, 10 That is why snares are all around you, why sudden peril terrifies you,
Or darkness, so that you cannot see, And an abundance of water covers you. 11 why it is so dark you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.
"Is not God in the height of heaven? Look also at the distant stars, how high they are! 12 "Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars!
"You say, 'What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness? 13 Yet you say, 'What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness?
'Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the vault of heaven.' 14 Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.'
"Will you keep to the ancient path Which wicked men have trod, 15 Will you keep to the old path that evil men have trod?
Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundations were washed away by a river? 16 They were carried off before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood.
"They said to God, 'Depart from us!' And 'What can the Almighty do to them?' 17 They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?'
"Yet He filled their houses with good things; But the counsel of the wicked is far from me. 18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the counsel of the wicked.
"The righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them, 19 "The righteous see their ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying,
Saying, 'Truly our adversaries are cut off, And their abundance the fire has consumed.' 20 'Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.'
"Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you. 21 "Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.
"Please receive instruction from His mouth And establish His words in your heart. 22 Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.
"If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove unrighteousness far from your tent, 23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent
And place your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks, 24 and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,
Then the Almighty will be your gold And choice silver to you. 25 then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you.
"For then you will delight in the Almighty And lift up your face to God. 26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.
"You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; And you will pay your vows. 27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.
"You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways. 28 What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways.
"When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence, And the humble person He will save. 29 When men are brought low and you say, 'Lift them up!' then he will save the downcast.
"He will deliver one who is not innocent, And he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands." 30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."
