Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
And Job again took up his discourse, and said: 1 And Job continued his discourse:
"As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter; 2 "As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made me taste bitterness of soul,
as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; 3 as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils,
my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. 4 my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will utter no deceit.
Far be it from me to say that you are right; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. 5 I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity.
I hold fast my righteousness, and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. 6 I will maintain my righteousness and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.
"Let my enemy be as the wicked, and let him that rises up against me be as the unrighteous. 7 "May my enemies be like the wicked, my adversaries like the unjust!
For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts him off, when God takes away his life? 8 For what hope has the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?
Will God hear his cry, when trouble comes upon him? 9 Does God listen to his cry when distress comes upon him?
Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? 10 Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times?
I will teach you concerning the hand of God; what is with the Almighty I will not conceal. 11 "I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.
Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain? 12 You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk?
"This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage which oppressors receive from the Almighty: 13 "Here is the fate God allots to the wicked, the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty:
If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring have not enough to eat. 14 However many his children, their fate is the sword; his offspring will never have enough to eat.
Those who survive him the pestilence buries, and their widows make no lamentation. 15 The plague will bury those who survive him, and their widows will not weep for them.
Though he heap up silver like dust, and pile up clothing like clay; 16 Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay,
he may pile it up, but the just will wear it, and the innocent will divide the silver. 17 what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver.
The house which he builds is like a spider's web, like a booth which a watchman makes. 18 The house he builds is like a moth's cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman.
He goes to bed rich, but will do so no more; he opens his eyes, and his wealth is gone. 19 He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone.
Terrors overtake him like a flood; in the night a whirlwind carries him off. 20 Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night.
The east wind lifts him up and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. 21 The east wind carries him off, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.
It hurls at him without pity; he flees from its power in headlong flight. 22 It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power.
It claps its hands at him, and hisses at him from its place. 23 It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place.
