Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each on his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 4 His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.
The LORD said to Satan, "Whence have you come?" Satan answered the LORD, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it." 7 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?" 8 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."
Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nought? 9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied.
Hast thou not put a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.
But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse thee to thy face." 11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."
And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do not put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. 12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house; 13 One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,
