In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The Word was with God in the beginning. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being. What came into being 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
through the Word was life, and the life was the light for all people. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn't extinguish the light. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
A man named John was sent from God. 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
He himself wasn't the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
The light was in the world, and the world came into being through the light, but the world didn't recognize the light. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
The light came to his own people, and his own people didn't welcome him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
But those who did welcome him, those who believed in his name, he authorized to become God's children, 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
born not from blood nor from human desire or passion, but born from God. 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his home among us. We have seen his glory, glory like that of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John testified about him, crying out, "This is the one of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than me because he existed before me.'" 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "
From his fullness we have all received grace upon grace; 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
as the Law was given through Moses, so grace and truth came into being through Jesus Christ. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God. God the only Son, who is at the Father's side, has made God known. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
This is John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, "Who are you?" 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
John confessed (he didn't deny but confessed), "I'm not the Christ." 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "
They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" John said, "I'm not." "Are you the prophet?" John answered, "No." 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
They asked, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?"
John replied, "I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, Make the Lord's path straight, just as the prophet Isaiah said." 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
Those sent by the Pharisees 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent
asked, "Why do you baptize if you aren't the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
John answered, "I baptize with water. Someone greater stands among you, whom you don't recognize. 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
He comes after me, but I'm not worthy to untie his sandal straps." 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
This encounter took place across the Jordan in Bethany where John was baptizing. 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
This is the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is really greater than me because he existed before me.' 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
Even I didn't recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be made known to Israel." 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
John testified, "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it rested on him. 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
Even I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
I have seen and testified that this one is God's Son." 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
The next day John was standing again with two of his disciples. 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
When he saw Jesus walking along he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!" 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
The two disciples heard what he said, and they followed Jesus. 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
When Jesus turned and saw them following, he asked, "What are you looking for?" They said, "Rabbi (which is translated Teacher), where are you staying?" 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
He replied, "Come and see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.
One of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Christ ). 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).
He led him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ).
The next day Jesus wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me."
"Follow me."Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, Joseph's son, from Nazareth." 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Nathanael responded, "Can anything from Nazareth be good?" Philip said, "Come and see." 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Here is a genuine Israelite in whom there is no deceit." 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are God's Son. You are the king of Israel." 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these! 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that."
I assure you that you will see heaven open and God's angels going up to heaven and down to earth on the Human One." 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
