Common English Bible (CEB) New International Version (NIV)
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vineyard keeper. 1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
He removes any of my branches that don't produce fruit, and he trims any branch that produces fruit so that it will produce even more fruit. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
You are already trimmed because of the word I have spoken to you. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. A branch can't produce fruit by itself, but must remain in the vine. Likewise, you can't produce fruit unless you remain in me. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can't do anything. 5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
If you don't remain in me, you will be like a branch that is thrown out and dries up. Those branches are gathered up, thrown into a fire, and burned. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.
My Father is glorified when you produce much fruit and in this way prove that you are my disciples. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
“As the Father loved me, I too have loved you. Remain in my love. 9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.
I have said these things to you so that my joy will be in you and your joy will be complete. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
No one has greater love than to give up one's life for one's friends. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.
I don't call you servants any longer, because servants don't know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
You didn't choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you could go and produce fruit and so that your fruit could last. As a result, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
I give you these commandments so that you can love each other. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
“If the world hates you, know that it hated me first. 18 "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. However, I have chosen you out of the world, and you don't belong to the world. This is why the world hates you. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
Remember what I told you, ‘Servants aren't greater than their master.' If the world harassed me, it will harass you too. If it kept my word, it will also keep yours. 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
The world will do all these things to you on account of my name, because it doesn't know the one who sent me. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.
“If I hadn't come and spoken to the people of this world, they wouldn't be sinners. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
Whoever hates me also hates the Father. 23 He who hates me hates my Father as well.
If I hadn't done works among them that no one else had done, they wouldn't be sinners. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 24 If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
This fulfills the word written in their Law, They hated me without a reason. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'
“When the Companion comes, whom I will send from the Father—the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. 26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
You will testify too, because you have been with me from the beginning. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
