Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
"I have told you this, so that you will not give up your faith. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
You will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time will come when those who kill you will think that by doing this they are serving God. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
People will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for them to do these things, you will remember what I told you. "I did not tell you these things at the beginning, for I was with you. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where I am going. 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
And now that I have told you, your hearts are full of sadness. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send him to you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he comes, he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God's judgment. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me; 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
and they are wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
"I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
"In a little while you will not see me any more, and then a little while later you will see me." 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
Some of his disciples asked among themselves, "What does this mean? He tells us that in a little while we will not see him, and then a little while later we will see him; and he also says, "It is because I am going to the Father.' 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
What does this "a little while' mean? We don't know what he is talking about!" 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them, "I said, "In a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me.' Is this what you are asking about among yourselves? 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
I am telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
When a woman is about to give birth, she is sad because her hour of suffering has come; but when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering, because she is happy that a baby has been born into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
That is how it is with you: now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
"When that day comes, you will not ask me for anything. I am telling you the truth: the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
"I have used figures of speech to tell you these things. But the time will come when I will not use figures of speech, but will speak to you plainly about the Father. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
When that day comes, you will ask him in my name; and I do not say that I will ask him on your behalf, 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
for the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you love me and have believed that I came from God. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I did come from the Father, and I came into the world; and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father." 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
Then his disciples said to him, "Now you are speaking plainly, without using figures of speech. 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
We know now that you know everything; you do not need to have someone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered, each of you to your own home, and I will be left all alone. But I am not really alone, because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!" 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
