13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was having a good night's rest, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died. 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14 Then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead. 14 So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,
15 And for your sake, I am glad I wasn't there, because this will give you another opportunity to believe in me. Come, let's go see him." 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."
16 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too -- and die with Jesus." 16 Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
19 and many of the people had come to pay their respects and console Martha and Mary on their loss. 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.
20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed at home. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21 Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 21 "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask." 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."
23 Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again." 23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
