New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem to attend the Passover 20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast.
paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, "Sir, we want to meet Jesus." 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus."
Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus. 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. 23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
The truth is, a kernel of wheat must be planted in the soil. Unless it dies it will be alone -- a single seed. But its death will produce many new kernels -- a plentiful harvest of new lives. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who despise their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
All those who want to be my disciples must come and follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And if they follow me, the Father will honor them. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, 'Father, save me from what lies ahead'? But that is the very reason why I came! 27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
Father, bring glory to your name."Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, "I have already brought it glory, and I will do it again." 28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."
When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him. 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
Then Jesus told them, "The voice was for your benefit, not mine. 30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
The time of judgment for the world has come, when the prince of this world will be cast out. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
And when I am lifted up on the cross, I will draw everyone to myself." 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself."
He said this to indicate how he was going to die. 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
"Die?" asked the crowd. "We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. Why are you saying the Son of Man will die? Who is this Son of Man you are talking about?" 34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"
Jesus replied, "My light will shine out for you just a little while longer. Walk in it while you can, so you will not stumble when the darkness falls. If you walk in the darkness, you cannot see where you are going. 35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.
Believe in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light." After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
