The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
All these God-signs he had given them and they still didn't get it, still wouldn't trust him. 37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
This proved that the prophet Isaiah was right: God, who believed what we preached? Who recognized God's arm, outstretched and ready to act? 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
First they wouldn't believe, then they couldn't - again, just as Isaiah said: 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
Their eyes are blinded, their hearts are hardened, So that they wouldn't see with their eyes and perceive with their hearts, And turn to me, God, so I could heal them. 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."
Isaiah said these things after he got a glimpse of God's cascading brightness that would pour through the Messiah. 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.
On the other hand, a considerable number from the ranks of the leaders did believe. But because of the Pharisees, they didn't come out in the open with it. They were afraid of getting kicked out of the meeting place. 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
When push came to shove they cared more for human approval than for God's glory. 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Jesus summed it all up when he cried out, "Whoever believes in me, believes not just in me but in the One who sent me. 44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
Whoever looks at me is looking, in fact, at the One who sent me. 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.
I am Light that has come into the world so that all who believe in me won't have to stay any longer in the dark. 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
"If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn't take it seriously, I don't reject him. I didn't come to reject the world; 47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.
I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I'm saying, is willfully choosing rejection. The Word, the Word-made-flesh that I have spoken and that I am, that Word and no other is the last word. 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
I'm not making any of this up on my own. The Father who sent me gave me orders, told me what to say and how to say it. 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.
And I know exactly what his command produces: real and eternal life. That's all I have to say. What the Father told me, I tell you." 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
