John 1:1-18 NLT/NIV - Online Parallel Bible

New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.
He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
God sent John the Baptist 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
to tell everyone about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
John himself was not the light; he was only a witness to the light. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
But although the world was made through him, the world didn't recognize him when he came. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
Even in his own land and among his own people, he was not accepted. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan -- this rebirth comes from God. 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John pointed him out to the people. He shouted to the crowds, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Someone is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.'" 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "
We have all benefited from the rich blessings he brought to us -- one gracious blessing after another. 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
For the law was given through Moses; God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God. But his only Son, who is himself God, is near to the Father's heart; he has told us about him. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
