GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
God sent a man named John to be his messenger. 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
John came to declare the truth about the light so that everyone would become believers through his message. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
John was not the light, but he came to declare the truth about the light. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The real light, which shines on everyone, was coming into the world. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him. Yet, the world didn't recognize him. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
He went to his own people, and his own people didn't accept him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
However, he gave the right to become God's children to everyone who believed in him. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
These people didn't become God's children in a physical way--from a human impulse or from a husband's desire [to have a child]. They were born from God. 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness and truth. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
