English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life.
Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. 2 But when the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near,
So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 3 Jesus' brothers said to him, "You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do.
For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world." 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."
For not even his brothers believed in him. 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 6 Therefore Jesus told them, "The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.
You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come." 8 You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come."
After saying this, he remained in Galilee. 9 Having said this, he stayed in Galilee.
But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 10 However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?" 11 Now at the Feast the Jews were watching for him and asking, "Where is that man?"
And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray." 12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, "He is a good man." Others replied, "No, he deceives the people."
Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the Jews.
About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 14 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.
The Jews therefore marveled, saying, "How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?" 15 The Jews were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having studied?"
So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 16 Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me.
If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 17 If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.
The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 18 He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?" 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?" 20 "You are demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?"
Jesus answered them, "I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 21 Jesus said to them, "I did one miracle, and you are all astonished.
Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath.
If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? 23 Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath?
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment." 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment."
