Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the Prophet." 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet."
Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 41 Others said, "He is the Christ." Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee?
"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" 42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?"
So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.
Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?" 45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?"
The officers answered, "Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks." 46 "No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared.
The Pharisees then answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you? 47 "You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted.
"No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 48 "Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
"But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed." 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse on them."
Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them, 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,
"Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?" 51 "Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?"
They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee." 52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee."
[Everyone went to his home. 53 Then each went to his own home.
