Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God: 1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
"In my distress, O Lord, I called to you, and you answered me. From deep in the world of the dead I cried for help, and you heard me. 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
You threw me down into the depths, to the very bottom of the sea, where the waters were all around me, and all your mighty waves rolled over me. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
I thought I had been banished from your presence and would never see your holy Temple again. 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
The water came over me and choked me; the sea covered me completely, and seaweed wrapped around my head. 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the very roots of the mountains, into the land whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, brought me back from the depths alive. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God.
When I felt my life slipping away, then, O Lord, I prayed to you, and in your holy Temple you heard me. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
Those who worship worthless idols have abandoned their loyalty to you. 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.
But I will sing praises to you; I will offer you a sacrifice and do what I have promised. Salvation comes from the Lord!" 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."
Then the Lord ordered the fish to spit Jonah up on the beach, and it did. 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
