New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Then the crew cast lots to see which of them had offended the gods and caused the terrible storm. When they did this, Jonah lost the toss. 7 Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
"What have you done to bring this awful storm down on us?" they demanded. "Who are you? What is your line of work? What country are you from? What is your nationality?" 8 So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"
And Jonah answered, "I am a Hebrew, and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land." 9 He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."
Then he told them that he was running away from the LORD.The sailors were terrified when they heard this. "Oh, why did you do it?" they groaned. 10 This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
