| 1 This is what the children of Israel possessed in the land of Chanaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Josue the son of Nun, and the princes of the families by the tribes of Israel gave to them. | 1 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them. |
| 2 Dividing all by lot, as the Lord had commanded the hand of Moses, to the nine tribes, and the half tribe. | 2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses. |
| 3 For to two tribes and a half Moses had given possession beyond the Jordan: besides the Levites, who received no land among their brethren: | 3 Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest, |
| 4 But in their place succeeded the children of Joseph divided into two tribes, of Manasses and Ephraim: neither did the Levites receive other portion of land, but cities to dwell in, and their suburbs to feed their beasts and flocks. | 4 for the sons of Joseph had become two tribes--Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds. |
| 5 As the Lord had commanded Moses so did the children of Israel, and they divided the land. | 5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
