A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies all around, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, 1 After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then old and well advanced in years,
Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders and heads, their judges and officers, and said to them, "I am now old and well advanced in years; 2 summoned all Israel--their elders, leaders, judges and officials--and said to them: "I am old and well advanced in years.
and you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. 3 You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the LORD your God who fought for you.
I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west 4 Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain--the nations I conquered--between the Jordan and the Great Sea in the west
The Lord your God will push them back before you, and drive them out of your sight; and you shall possess their land, as the Lord your God promised you. 5 The LORD your God himself will drive them out of your way. He will push them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
Therefore be very steadfast to observe and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right nor to the left, 6 "Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.
so that you may not be mixed with these nations left here among you, or make mention of the names of their gods, or swear by them, or serve them, or bow yourselves down to them, 7 Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them.
but hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day. 8 But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now.
For the Lord has driven out before you great and strong nations; and as for you, no one has been able to withstand you to this day. 9 "The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you.
One of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God who fights for you, as he promised you. 10 One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised.
Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God. 11 So be very careful to love the LORD your God.
